Are you desperate for attention?
Getting noticed is one of the hardest goals to achieve in today’s web. Attention can make or literally break your business. Without it, no business will survive no matter what their budget is!
I believe that today’s web has changed the way we do business for good. Attention these days is earned and not something that could be taken for granted as was the case probably few years ago. If your business needs attention, then you should work hard to get it.
If you’re a small business owner, then I know how hard it is for you to get your brand noticed. It’s true that there will always be great opportunities for unique brands that succeed at differentiating themselves from their competitors, but it’s still a crowded space!
Everybody seems to be investing in digital more and more, because most business owners realize how important that could be to their businesses. There are also some other people who kind of still have the old mentality of shady tactics, but all of them will soon realize that their practices will never work in today’s web!
There are many ways to get noticed in today’s web. However, if you look at your Analytics, then you might probably see that you have 2 major BEASTS that are driving you attention (traffic).
These 2 BEASTS are search engines (or should I say Google) and Social Media!
Where People Get Search Engine Optimization Wrong?
Some search engine optimizers are still caught in the middle of the old tactics storm. They still believe that anchor text and Hx tags are still important to Google the way they were a few years ago. I still to this day find article that are stuffed with keywords from head to toe, in the title, the first phrase, H1, H2, H3 tags, in the last phrase, image ALT…etc. I’m not saying that you shouldn’t do on-page optimization, I’m just saying that today’s user is impatient and short spanned, and one silly thing like forcing keywords in phrases can instantly turn them off!
How You Should Do Search Engine Optimization
Let me tell you something here. Google and every other company on earth only cares about their user experience. They know that if they deliver a good experience to their users, then and only then they will return. A smart way to go is to give Google’s visitors what they want, which is a great experience. If you make your website load fast, decrease your bounce rate and deliver great value, then there is no doubt that Google will reward you with more attention!
I’m sure that you noticed that content marketing has been the “THING” in the previous months, and it will probably be the “THING” for years to come. Also, storytelling has been proven to bring in magnificent results for brands, and all these pour in the same lake, which is “User Experience”!
Where People Get Social Media Optimization Wrong?
I don’t know about you, but I’m sick and tired of those fancy headlines that don’t live up to the promise. You find a well crafted headline that invokes your curiosity and makes you think that you’ve stumbled on the goldmine of the day, and when you follow the link, you’ll find those “Be Authentic” kinds of posts. You know what I mean
The only thing these people are doing is exhausting their servers. They might get someone who isn’t already familiar with their tactics, but they won’t get me or YOU. And even if they do get people to follow their links on social media, nobody really cares about what they’re offering once they land on their pages and read their low quality content!
The only thing these people get is probably vanity! They might brag to their friends of the traffic they’re getting from social media, but what they don’t realize is that their bounce rate is probably higher than 99%. They’re just fooling themselves in hopes of fooling other people! These guys are desperate for attention to the point that they’ll do anything to get noticed.
You might write a fancy headline and post it to Reddit and probably receive thousands of visitors, but by the end of the day, you’ll realize that nobody out of these people have subscribed to your newsletter or bought your product. Do you think that matters for your business?
How You Should Do Social Media Optimization
It’s true that great headlines are a key to getting attention on the social web, but a great “User Experience” is what every headline you craft should deliver. You might not get the same results as when using extreme headlines, but the great experience your content will deliver to those few will be amplified by them so you can reach even more people.
For me personally, I stopped clicking on those fancy headlines, especially from brands that I know are involved in these kinds of practices. They might have something important to say, but they’ve lost my interest because they didn’t deliver the value promised. Do you want that to happen to your business!
To answer my headline, YES, it’s possible to feed the 2 beasts without sacrificing the user experience. You know why? Because these 2 beasts care about their users like you should care about yours, and if you help them do their job which is delivering a great experience to their users, they will help you get attention!
So how do you ensure you deliver the best experience to your users?
